In this article we go back over the political factors that allowed Alexias I Comnenus to consolidate his control over the Byzantine state. We focus on the relationship established among the emperor, the Church and the lay aristocracy in order to reexamine the process of dynastic consolidation of the Comneni and their redefinition of social dynamics within the Empire.
